چکیده

Dose reconstruction is a comprehensive analysis of the exposure received by individuals in the vicinity of facilities that release contaminants to the environment (i.e., real doses to real people).Performing dose reconstruction analyses which are extremely important elements for improving efficiency in radiological emergencies and accidents have been studied in this paper. For dose reconstruction purposes, the organ doses from internal and external sources are used to evaluate the risk of stochastic detriment and to determine limit values which have been exceeded. For contaminant releases, radiation doses estimates are needed for individual exposures in release procedures. Internal organ doses are not directly measured and there are different biokinetic models to estimate organ doses. These models are not always directly applicable to individuals who undergo exposures, mainly due to significant differences between healthy and pathological organ/metabolism (clinical conditions). There are two case studies in this paper for internal exposures and external exposures; In the first, we have estimated mean absorbed doses in internal exposures to organs by three different methods; using the conversion coefficients of ICRP publications 53, 62 or 80, for radio-nuclides, Through Monte Carlo simulation, using the Visual Monte Carlo (VMC), Biokinetic models simulation using Dose and risk CALculation (DCAL). In the second one we have estimated mean absorbed dose in external exposure with Co as source 60 with three methods; using IAEA absorbed dose, VMC calculations and DCAL calculations. The comparison between the results was discussed.

Cytokinesis blocked micronucleus (CB-MN) assay for biodosimetry of high dose accidental exposure

Background: Most of the cytogenetic dosimetry, except Premature Chromosome Condensation assay, saturates at 6 Gy. Present studies are aimed to assess feasibility of simple CB-MN assay for prescreening of high dose accidental exposures. Materials and Methods: Human peripheral blood lymphocytes from two donors were gamma irradiated to different doses ranging from 0-15Gy, cultured for 72 h. Cytoch...

Implications for environmental health of multiple stressors.

Recent insights into the mechanisms underlying the biological effects of low dose effects of ionising radiation have revealed that similar mechanisms can be induced by chemical stressors in the environment. This means that interactions between radiation and chemicals are likely and that the outcomes following mixed exposures to radiation and chemicals may not be predictable for human health, by...

Physical dose reconstruction in case of radiological accidents : an asset for the victims ’ management

In most cases of radiological accidents caused by an external source, the irradiation is heterogeneous, even for a whole body irradiation. Therefore, more than a whole body dose, estimating the dose distribution in the victim's organism is essential to assess biological damages. This dose distribution can be obtained by physical dosimetric reconstruction methods. The laboratory has developed se...

A review of uncertainties in radiotherapy dose reconstruction and their impacts on dose-response relationships.

Proper understanding of the risk of radiation-induced late effects for patients receiving external photon beam radiotherapy requires the determination of reliable dose-response relationships. Although significant efforts have been devoted to improving dose estimates for the study of late effects, the most often questioned explanatory variable is still the dose. In this work, based on a literatu...

Radon induced hyperplasia: effective adaptation reducing the local doses in the bronchial epithelium.

There is experimental and histological evidence that chronic irritation and cell death may cause hyperplasia in the exposed tissue. As the heterogeneous deposition of inhaled radon progeny results in high local doses at the peak of the bronchial bifurcations, it was proposed earlier that hyperplasia occurs in these deposition hot spots upon chronic radon exposure. The objective of the present s...
